恩古吉·瓦·提安哥(1938--) 出身于东非肯尼亚卡米里苏一个贫困的农民家庭，在地理上属于英国殖民统治下称为"白色高地"的行政区域。 1962年恩古吉在"非洲英语作家研讨会"上遇见了著名非洲作家索因卡和阿契贝，这次重要的会面使他决心走上"终身非洲作家"的道路，同年，恩古吉创作了剧本《黑色隐士》(T heBlackH erm it)。1964年恩古吉毕业于乌干达马赫雷雷大学。1977年，他因抗议当局对英语的强制性教育而被政府逮捕，拘禁超过一年。获释后与家人过着流亡的生活，直到肯尼亚独裁者阿拉普·莫伊下台才终于得以安全回国。由于政治和健康的原因，最近十几年，恩古吉和阿契贝一样旅居美国，在美国的大学工作。
